Dr. Fasakin stands suspended as president for gross misconduct – Unilorin Alumni Association
CESSATION OF OFFICE OF DR. STEPHEN OLAWALE FASAKIN AS THE NATIONAL PRESIDENT OF UNIVERSITY OF ILORIN ALUMNI ASSOCIATION ON THE GROUND OF GROSS MISCONDUCT AND ABUSE OF OFFICE
The attention of the University of Ilorin Alumni Association has been drawn to a letter purportedly written by Dr. Stephen FASAKIN (the erstwhile President of the Association) with respect to the meeting of the Convocation held at the University of Ilorin for the purpose of electing a representative into the University Governing Council.
The letter, to all intents and purposes, is scurrilous, self-serving and ill-conceived. It is a complete embarrassment to our teeming members as it fails to represent the good image and protect the time-tested harmonious relationship of the Association with the University.
We wish to use this medium to inform Nigerians that we members dissociate ourselves from the letter and its contents. We also want to set the record straight about Dr. Fasakin’s present status within our Association.
For the avoidance of doubt, Article 2 of our Constitution states unequivocally the aims and objectives of the Association. However, Dr. Fasakin’s conduct since his assumption of office has repeatedly violated the norms, tradition and guiding principles of the Association. Like a bull in a china shop, he has been destroying the fabrics of the Association and our relationship with other alumni bodies through his opportunism and greed.
The last straw to break the camels back is the letter signed by him and addressed to the Vice-Chancellor on the election of our representative to the Governing Council. The letter, among other things, clearly reveals his ignorance of the provisions of the University of Ilorin Act and with expression of his ignorance is also a total disregard for sub-Sections (i) and (vi) of Article 2 of our Association’s Constitution.
The said letter in part, is a clear affront to the existing close relationship between the University authority as it seeks to create a wedge between the entire university community and our great Association. This is a clear violation of the spirit and letter our Constitution.
The deliberate circulation of the same letter without any discussion or recourse to the National Executive Committee also leaves less to be desired of a person camouflaging as the National President of the Association. To wit, Dr Fasakin should have actually known the negative implications of his ill-motivated letter for the image of our association and the integrity of our alma mater to the outside world.
Rather than consult widely, Dr. Fasakin chose to use the structure of the association for personal interest and aggrandizement and by implication, attempt to distort the historical truth on how we arrived at the present mutually benefitting accord with members of the University community and the administration over the years.
If the only reason for wanting to become Alumni President is to be on the Governing Council of the University of Ilorin, then it is not a goal for Dr. Fasakin! At the University, what we cherish is encapsulated in the motto of “character and learning” in both of which Dr Fasakin is challenged.
It is important to inform the public, especially the good members of the University Community, of the antics of Dr. Fasakin for which he stands suspended from office. Dr. Fasakin since assumption of office has relied solely on the Association’s funds for personal needs and of recent, he singlehandedly and illegally formed a parallel body called the Association of Nigeria Universities Alumni (ANUA) with the association money. The matter has since degenerated and caused an unnecessary legal battle.
When challenged of the illegality of using the Association’s fund, Dr. Fasakin committed another aberration by unilaterally suspending two duly elected members of his Executive Committee. In clear terms, Dr. Fasakin suspended elected members by Congress without any reference to the National Executive Committee or the National Executive Council or the Congress.
Dr Fasakin also corruptly and singlehandedly embarked on the capital project of producing graduation scrolls and alumni mufflers during the Coronavirus-imposed lockdown. This was in a year the University could not hold any convocation ceremony. He had the effrontery to project his ambition as that of the association with a threat that “we shall seek redress” instead of being ashamed of undermining the integrity of the Association within his short time of holding the office.
Without mincing words, we want to congratulate the University on the success on the just concluded election of an eminently qualified member of the University Community and prominent alumnus as the representative of Convocation on the Governing Council. We wish to remind Dr. Fasakin that in love, peace and harmony, we shall build the tower herein called University of Ilorin.
The University, in due course, shall be informed of the outcome of another emergency Congress of the Association scheduled for a date to be communicated soonest.
We wish the University of Ilorin continuous peace, development and stability. Our members at home and abroad also give their unflinching support to the present leadership of the University under Prof. Sulyman Age ABDULKAREEM.
Again, the University and the public should note that DR. WALE STEPHEN FASAKIN REMAINS SUSPENDED AND DOES NOT REPRESENT THE INTEREST OF THE ASSOCATION.
Long live Federal Republic of Nigeria!
Long live University of Ilorin!
Long live Unilorin Alumni Association!
